Do You Qualify for Health Coverage Today?
You may enroll or change your health care coverage
during an annual open enrollment period. However outside
of the open enrollment period, you may enroll or change
your coverage only if you experience what's known as a
triggering event. For example, if you get married, have
a baby, or lose coverage because you lose your job – all
triggering events – you qualify to enroll or change your
coverage during a special enrollment period.
A special enrollment period lasts 60 days after
the triggering event occurs. That means if you've
experienced a triggering event, you have 60 days from
the day of the triggering event to change or apply for
health care coverage for yourself and/or your dependent.
Additionally, if you know you are going to have a
triggering event in the future, you may be able to apply
for coverage ahead of time.
Examples of triggering events are:
- Loss of health care coverage due to job loss
- Gaining or becoming a dependent
- Permanent move so that you have different
choices in health care plans
- Change in eligibility for federal financial
assistance through the Health Insurance
Marketplace
- Employer health coverage changes that impact
your eligibility for federal financial
assistance
